Home Organization Tools

Updated: Jan 19, 2019

Welcome to the new year! As you may know, January is National Organization Month and what better way to begin 2019 than by tackling one of the most common new year resolutions. To help you get started we have put together some useful tools to tackle your home decluttering and organization projects.

Organization Calendar

We all are prone to get overwhelmed by multi-day tasks. Especially when what seemed short and simple stretches past your expectations. As we have discussed in past posts, breaking down a project into stages can help tremendously. Make use of a calendar to schedule out when you will tackle each part of your house. Don’t bite off too much at a time! Just write down one small closet or set of drawers to tackle in a day. Then keep scheduling the next room, corner, closet, or area until you have tackled the whole house. Give yourself time.

Tags, Label Maker, or Markers

How many times have you gone through box after box to find the one shirt, pair of shoes, or item you needed? Categorizing and labeling your storage is a great way to prevent this common frustration. Label makers can be a life saver if your penmanship is less than legible. On the other hand, if you find yourself reusing containers for various purposes than chalkboard or dry-erase stickers might work better. You can purchase rolls of self-adhesive white board contact paper to create your own!

Duster & Vacuum Cleaner

It is amazing how fast dust can settle in every nook and cranny of your home. Send those dust bunnies packing! Keep a duster and vacuum cleaner nearby and dispose of the dust before it has a chance to float away and collect elsewhere. Your nose and allergies will thank you!

Trash Bags & Cardboard Boxes

A big part of organizing is downsizing, so trash bags are an essential part of any project. Not only do you have items you will need to throw away, but trash bags and card board boxes are perfect for donations too. Heavy duty bags are recommended to better handle large or pointed objects. No one wants to have to pick up objects twice. Don’t forget to label each bag or box so you know where it is going.

Stackable Storage Bins

Card board boxes are ok for a move, but plastic tubs and totes are far better for organization and making sure your items stay protected. Ideally the size and shape will fit what is going inside. Here is what we mean by that: super large and deep bins may be perfect for storing bedding or sweaters but can be far too heavy or difficult to go through if filled with books or holiday decorations. So getting a mix of shallow and deep bins that all stack together can help you better organize while saving your back too.

Under Bed Organization

Is the space under your beds a wasteland of odds and ends? Is the area under your guest bed being used at all? This overlooked location in your home is often underutilized for storing and organizing. Finding the right organizers is key. Under bed shoe organizers can be a great option to put out of season or rarely used footwear. Sliding flat bins can be perfect for folded clothes. Don’t forget to measure the height of your bed from the floor before shopping.

Vacuum Sealer Bags

A potentially huge space saver and clothes preserver. These plastic bags can be used to seal and then collapse clothes with a vacuum cleaner. Sweaters, sweatshirts, coats, pillows, and comforters are perfect candidates. They take up a lot of room, so collapsing them them down can be a huge space saver.

Drawer Organizers & Dividers

Drawers are another clutter magnet in our homes. Whether it is clothes, socks, office supplies, or odds and ends it is easy for the mess to grow. Reclaim the drawers in your home with organizers. There are a few different options that can help. Pre-made drawer organizers come in all shapes and sizes. For larger items drawer dividers can break up larger drawers. Even a utensil or silverware drawer organizer can be used for other spaces like a junk or craft drawer.

Clothes Hangers

Is your closet filled with hangers of all shapes, sizes and quality? This is a common and overlooked problem. Instead of fighting with the mass of assorted hangers, swap them out for a set of matching, versatile hangers that fit your needs. It is amazing how less cluttered your closet will look and how much frustration you will avoid. A bonus space saving idea is to employ hanging closet rods to add another row of clothes below what you already have.
